The inaugural ride for Gran Fondo Hincapie-Fort Worth brought more than 1,000 cyclists to the Lone Star State’s ranch roads for an epic weekend of riding, partying, and celebrating all things cycling.
For many, the Gran Fondo Hincapie-Fort Worth experience began early Friday morning at Heart of the Ranch, when hundreds of local volunteers and Hincapie ambassadors came together to begin setup for the event. From fencing to a gigantic red carpet to blow-up arches and a vendor expo, the Clearfork area was transformed into a cycling oasis. Friday afternoon, cyclists enjoyed a warmup ride before meeting back at Mellow Johnny’s to check out a live viewing of “The Move” podcast with Lance Armstrong and George Hincapie. Following the podcast, riders sampled culinary creations at the Celebrity Chef Dinner located at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas.
The weather in North Texas was less-than-forgiving, but that didn’t stop hundreds of cyclists from lining up at the start line to ride the 15-mile, 50-mile, or 80-mile routes. Cycling celebrities George Hincapie, Lance Armstrong, and Christian Vande Velde braved the wind and cold as Mayor Betsy Price welcomed the crowd.
The course covered all-things-Texas, from rolling countrysides to cows, bluebonnets, and the beautiful Benbrook Lake.
Once the ride was finished, cyclists celebrated at the Family Festival. In addition to live music, Righteous Foods and Heim Barbecue provided Texas favorites tacos and brisket, while Magdalena’s made it an official Hincapie event with their steaming hot paella. Riders also enjoyed free drinks, including George’s Draft, of course.
