The 13th annual Gran Fondo Hincapie cycling race in Greenville almost broke tradition as the frequent fall event was nearly canceled due to Tropical Storm Helene.
Normally, the 80-50- and 15-mile cycling event takes a route from Hotel Domestique in Taylors through the Western portion of North Carolina, which was heavily affected by the storm's aftermath.
Instead of giving in, Rich Hincapie, owner of Hincapie Events, decided to host the event still, altering the route to a one-loop, 19-mile course to raise $1 million to benefit the Polk County Community Foundation.
