Keeping Warm in the Cold

Cyclist riding in cold weather

As temperatures begin to dip, so does your comfort during a ride. Time to suit up and #ridehincapie.

The most important rule of thumb is to layer, layer, layer. Layering traps warm air in, and a good moisture-wicking base layer keeps sweat away from your skin. This is especially important when it’s cold outside, as you don’t want to feel wet during the duration of the ride. Base layers with heavier weights are the best for cold days, providing an extra level of warmth.

Above all else, dress a little lighter than your body tells you to. Once you get moving on the bike, you’ll naturally warm up, and you don’t want to have to deal with removing layers 10 minutes into the ride.

Still not sure where to start? We’ve put together three different guides for you.

Frigid

In especially cold temps, wool is your friend. The natural fibers maintain their ability to keep you warm, even when absorbing moisture. Also take care to add extra layers to those areas that may not be insulated from the breeze: your neck, knees, feet, and hands.

Cold

When you’re hammering it out in cold weather, dress in layers in case you need to shed a few later. Layer a vest over a jersey, wear warmers instead of a jacket, and choose a headband over a full hat so that you can release a little heat.
