More than $15 million already raised by 7,000 riders for Pelotonia 2019

Pelotonia

If you’re like us, you probably don’t need many excuses to throw on your kit and hit the road, because the ride itself is enough. Despite this, riding with a purpose provides an extra tank of gas you never knew you had, especially when the purpose is to make a difference. Pelotonia, a three-day cycling experience dedicated to raising funds for cancer research, has provided thousands of Riders with that purpose.

The Organization

Since its first ride in 2008, Pelotonia has raised nearly $200 million for cancer research. The 2019 experience took place August 2-4, and has already generated over $15 million and will continue to raise funds for this year through October 4th, 2019. Each of the last 10 years, the Pelotonia community has raised over $20 million annually for cancer research. Thanks to the Pelotonia’s committed sponsors, which they call funding partners, 100% of every Rider-raised dollar goes directly to funding cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC- James).

The OSUCCC- James and the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology

The OSUCCC-James is one of the leading cancer research hospitals in the world, with more than 300 researchers and specialized oncologists working to improve cancer treatment through a relentless effort to assess and cure individual cases. Completed in 2011, the new OSUCCC- James building is a revolutionary 21-story hospital designed to bring researchers and personalized clinical care closer together than ever before. Through this model the OSUCCC- James hope to restore hope for individuals while bringing us closer to a cancer-free world.

Just recently Pelotonia announced a landmark donation to the Ohio State University in support of the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology (PIIO) at OSUCCC-James. The five-year financial pledge of $102,265,000 is the largest donation in the cancer center’s history and is made possible because of the Pelotonia community of Riders, Virtual Riders, Volunteers, Donors, Researchers and Supporters.

The total amount of the gift – $102,265,000 – is a way of paying tribute to Pelotonia’s inaugural bike ride in 2009 and the 2,265 riders who participated. Since then, Pelotonia has grown into a movement that inspires meaningful collective action by mobilizing purpose-driven communities and accelerating funding for innovative cancer research.

The PIIO will focus exclusively on this innovative area of research that harnesses the body’s immune system to fight cancer and is redefining how cancer is prevented, detected and treated in the United States.

Join Pelotonia

Pelotonia is more than a weekend of cycling, it’s a community of Riders brought together under the dream that together we will end cancer. If you’re interested in participating, registration to ride in Pelotonia 2020 will open February 2020, however you can still sign up to participate as a Virtual Rider for 2019 and commit to raise just $100 for cancer research. When registration for Pelotonia 2020 opens, you can join as an individual or create a Peloton with your friends or coworkers, and can even register with a partner to ride tandem, as long as you both meet the minimum fundraising requirements. If you’re not up for riding or traveling to Columbus, although we highly recommend it, there are additional ways to register either as a Virtual Rider or Volunteer.

Donating and Fundraising

All Pelotonia Riders are expected to raise a minimum amount in order to participate in the ride. This amount varies depending on route and Rider status, so be sure to visit pelotonia.org/ to determine what route and commitment is right for you. If you are unable to ride, consider donating to another Rider or becoming a Virtual Rider, one who does not participate in the ride but is still expected to raise a minimum commitment. Additionally, there are many volunteer opportunities available. Whether you are riding, donating, or volunteering, every effort contributes to a great cause.
